Step-by-step guide To Composing

1 place a bin in the garden

2 Fill the bin with dead leaves, green waste from the garden, old plants you’ve pulled out, the contents of their pet hamster, gerbil or bird cage when they clean it out, fruit and vegetable peelings from the kitchen

3 Next, sprinkle in some soil and water.

4 Cover the bin with an old piece of carpet or a doormat to keep the heat in and leave it alone until you have some more waste to put inside.

5 After three or four months remove the cover and dig the compost over. Leave it to rot down further.

6 When the bottom of the compost is brown and crumbly, it is ready already.

The Squatters’ Reflections On Our Plants

Tze Yen

Although the exams are round the corner, but my group members will check on our surviving plants regularly. Roxanne brought fertilisers to fertilise our plants. The cucumber plants are growing very slowly, I know that these things take time, so I have to be patient. However, one of my group member, Beautrice, her plant has flowered already. We have twelve seedlings and one grown plant. I feel very proud of my group and our plants. ;]

Shabana

Everyone in my group did their roles well although exams are just round the corner. I am quite happy to see our plants growing well. With regular watering of our plants. I’m sure it will grow to be big and will also grow well. I am very proud of our group members and our plants. Hope Beautrice’s plants bears a fruit. =P

 Ng Jin

I’m very happy that though everyone is busy and preparing for the exams. Our group still has some time to spare and water the plants regularly. I’m glad that our plants are growing well though it’s growing very slowly. I hope Beautrice’s plants can flower more and maybe even bear some cucumber fruit.  (:

Beautrice

I am quite satisfied with my cucumber plant. It grew very well, even with blossoming yellow flowers! However, I think that it has grown slower than I’ve expected, as compared to my class’s other group growing long beans, almost 5 times or more, taller than ours.  I am also very glad that my fellow teammates have even taken the initiative to buy seeds to grow more plants and bring fertilisers for the cucumber plants. Despite the busy and tight schedules before our exams, we have taken out time to water them. I have confidence that with our regular watering and showering of our love to our cucumber plants, they will all grow rapidly and healthily. I enjoy this fun growing process, it’s a great bonding session for all of us too.   ;D

Roxanne

After regrowing the plants, everyone now has a plant. We still go and water our plants regularly. One of our group member, Beautrice, her plant is growing very well and I envy her a lot. I even grew some cucumbers at home and they are growing very well too. My plant, however, is growing very slowly so I brought some fertilisers to speed up the growing process. I was told not to put them too close to the roots. I hope our cucumbers would bear fruit in time.  (=

Constance

Exams are coming! Everyone are still working, busying studying. But not forgetting the plants, we would still go check the plants once every 2 days. Beautrice’s plant had grown about the length of 60cm that tall. I’m looking forward to the product of our plant and tasting the cucumber we have grown ourselves. Work hard!  [;

hello
the plants are planted in a container with damp cotton wool on wednesday. We tried it before and it is really faster, however, the plants cannot be left too long in it or they will be weak and unhealthy because of the lack of nutrients. so today the roots came out already and we plan to transplant them onto the plot of land right after their first pair of leaves appear. Good luck to us. =D

RESEARCH
SPACING AND DEPTH

Plant seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep and thin the seedlings to one cucumber plant every 12 inches in a row. If you plant cucumbers in hills, thin the plants to three plants per hill and space the hills 36 inches apart.

SPECIAL CARE

Cucumbers have roots that grow only a few inches into the soil, so they need water throughout the growing season. If you do not have a lot of space, you may want to grow cucumbers on a fence or trellis.

HARVESTING

Pick cucumbers when they are dark green and firm. For slicing cucumbers, pick when they are six to eight inches long. Do not let cucumbers turn yellow. Check plants every other day for cucumbers that are ready to harvest. Cucumbers can grow from seed to harvest in 60 to 75 days.

FLOWERS

Cucumbers have two different flowers, male and female. See figures 6 and 7. Male flowers open first and always drop off. Female flowers form the cucumber and should not drop off. If female flowers begin to drop, touch the inside of each male and female flower with a soft brush or cotton swab. This pollinates the flowers and helps them develop into fruit.

REFLECTION

BEAUTRICE
Everyday i water my plant regularly, day and night. On the third day, i realised that both of my plants are very close together. Thus, i seperated them. On the next day, i was sad to find that one of them was
half-dead! Then i pinned all my hopes on the other one.  It grew up to be healthy and green. I felt so happy when i brought it to school and realised that only my plants survived in my group.

SHABANA
When i first got the cucumber seed, i felt very excited as it would be the first time i would be able to plant. Everyday, i will remember to water my plant 2 times,  one in the day and one in the night. However, as day pass, i forgot to water the plant twice. Sometimes, i will not even water my plant. I guess, that is the reason why my plant died. When i came home from school, I was shocked to see just the stem. The leaves have wilted. That moment, i felt very sad as all my hardwork had gone the drain.Although my plant died, i m glad that i learnt a lesson. I learnt that i should be more caring and not to be forgetful.

CONSTANCE
In this group, i am the secretary. My job was to record down every detail of the meeting. My plant died after putting it in the soil as it is too weak and small to grow there. My classmates grew 2 big plants. i felt happy for them. Only Roxanne’s re-plant was successful. I hope that it can grow and save our face. I really enjoy IPW lessons.

NGJIN
In this group, i was the researcher. My group is growing a cucumber plant. My plant died. However, one of my group member Roxanne, bought a packet of seeds and she gave me 3 seeds. Only two grew but the stem broke and the plant died again. I feel upset about it but the group has decided to try growing the cucumber plant again. I’m excited about it and i hope the cucumber can grow.

TZEYEN
In this group,i am the group leader. My group is growing cucumber plant. My plant died when i was supposed to bring it to school to plant it in the patch. Roxanne wanted to pass me a few seeds, however i declined. I do not really have green fingers, so i did up the blog. I took some pictures during the learning journey to Bottle Tree Park. Roxanne will be giving me seeds to grow the plant again. I agreed as i can’t contribute to the blog as my computer got virus.

ROXANNE
when i first got the cucumber seeds, i was very excited and took extra care of it. However, the plant grew too close together. Afraid that the plant would be too cramp i seperated both and accidentaly hurted the roots. Both plants died. I decided to get a packet of seeds from a shop. I decided to be more “kiasu” and plant more. All 5 grew fine until it got attacked by snails and only one survived. we decided to try to plant again together. I am very excited and hope that they all would grow up fine and produce fat, juicy and tasty cucumbers.
